The Actors Studio at Lot 10!

Posted by DAVID BC TAN under: Announcement; Event.

tas_opening_poster_web
For those of you who may not know, The Actors Studio has been given a new home at the Lot 10 rooftop – thanks to YTL Corp. Lot 10 – (again for those who do not know) – is just across the street from Sungei Wang Plaza and here’s the map.

Apparently the newly designed theatre has been described as a “forest in the city.” You can read about the new theatre launch here. An earlier story in YTL’s  Community newsletter with a few photos of the site is found here.

To get a feel of the spanking new 250-seater theatre on the rooftop of Lot 10 Shopping Centre, now’s the time to pay a visit. For the whole of this week, TAS will be offering FREE performances. I’ve listed the full programme on our NOTICES (October) page.

O what a night!

Posted by DAVID BC TAN under: Event; Social & Leisure.

It was wild, literally!

Over 50 families, and almost 180 adults and children at our Homeschool Dinner at Lakeview Club, Subang Jaya. At first we weren’t sure if we could get a respectable crowd, but as January 10 drew nearer there was a sudden jump in email confirmation. There’s Malaysia for you.

What a mixed crowd at the Homeschool Dinner!

In some ways we were quite unprepared for the numbers, but it was a good problem. The buffet dinner went off alright as everyone  piled on the food, found a table, and kept the conversation going.

There were so many new faces -  some whom we only knew by their online nicks or names, on MALHEN and HOMEFRONTIER newsgroups. And what a pleasant surprise to meet folks from HOMESCHOOL UNITE, another fledgling newsgroup that’s spreading the good word about homeschool in Malaysia! Thank you all for your presence!

Special performances

I could see that a lot of parents present had only recently started to educate their own children, and so were grateful to meet up with other homeschooling families. What a multicultural/multireligious mix! I did feel somewhat overwhelmed and a little lost for words mingling with Malaysians and expats, brought together by one common cause: we’ve decided to stop whining about the state of Malaysian education. We’re taking back our kids to teach them at home. And our number is on the rise.

We could have done with a bit better planning for sure.

For one, the sound system was a total letdown, manned by a person who was totally disinterested.  Also, the next time we’ll have to think twice about buffet with presentations and performances happening at the same time. Hard to eat and pay attention to  presentations out in front on a makeshift, erm,’stage.’ And the kids, the kids – whoa – the younger ones were having their own party.

A mothe shares

Finally, for those who came specifically with burning questions about homeschool, the evening probably wasn’t the best place to find answers. Our apologies. I do hope the conversation and sharing helped though.

However if anyone thought homeschoolers were a bunch of weirdos surfacing for a bit of air, the diversity of homeschoolers that evening should force a rethink. There was cammaderie and friendship, electricity in the air. So it’s still a fringe movement, but that’s how all revolutions start. We are onto something good here and many ordinary families have only just discovered it. Our family’s own journey began some 15 years ago. For that we will always remain thankful.
