CHRISTIAN HOMESCHOOL SEMINAR

Posted by DAVID BC TAN under: Announcement.

NEWSFLASH!
We’re pleased to announce that we’ve finalised details for our Christian Homeschool Seminar on Saturday 24 July 2010. Titled, CHRISTIAN HOMESCHOOL: FOUNDATIONS FOR RADICAL DISCIPLESHIP, we aim to take a big picture view of homeschooling – beyond books and education, to a radical paradigm of discipleship.

Homeschoolers Moses Tey and his wife Cathy and their 2 boys are from the US, and they have become family friends  since our paths converged. I heartily welcome you to give him a listen and be challenged.  Moses and Cathy are passionate about reflecting God’s glory in authentic community through an integrated lifestyle encompassing family, small group and church.

We have heard Moses speak numerous times.  He is a passionate presenter committed to Scripture and practical application.  Come to have your world view challenged, passion refreshed, and vision deepened. Apologies for the late notice.

Short courses at LIFE COLLEGE

Posted by DAVID BC TAN under: Announcement.

I’ve placed a banner link to LIFE COLLEGE on HOMEFRONTIER. LIFE COLLEGE has been good to homeschoolers and students from learning centres, and that makes the college worthy of our support.

BTW, do check out their new professional short courses -I’m sure there’s something for everybody. Homeschoolers might want to find out if there’s one that matches their interest or inclination.

I previously wrote about entry requirements for homeschoolers at LIFE and the post may be read here.

Homefrontier – on Facebook

Posted by DAVID BC TAN under: Announcement.

HF3 I’ve got a page on Facebook now (finally!),  so that’s one more avenue for discussion and networking.  I hope to pool updates, announcements and photos, so if you’re homeschooling and if you want a shout-out regarding meet-ups, events, socials, etc, let me know. No promises, but I’ll do what I can.  The homeschooling community is a small but diverse one – which is one of the things I love about it! It helps to keep informed and in touch. Cheers!

The Actors Studio at Lot 10!

Posted by DAVID BC TAN under: Announcement; Event.

tas_opening_poster_web
For those of you who may not know, The Actors Studio has been given a new home at the Lot 10 rooftop – thanks to YTL Corp. Lot 10 – (again for those who do not know) – is just across the street from Sungei Wang Plaza and here’s the map.

Apparently the newly designed theatre has been described as a “forest in the city.” You can read about the new theatre launch here. An earlier story in YTL’s  Community newsletter with a few photos of the site is found here.

To get a feel of the spanking new 250-seater theatre on the rooftop of Lot 10 Shopping Centre, now’s the time to pay a visit. For the whole of this week, TAS will be offering FREE performances. I’ve listed the full programme on our NOTICES (October) page.

A homeschooler adrift…

Posted by DAVID BC TAN under: Announcement.

ethan2PUBLIC TALK

A Young Man and the Sea
By Ethan Tan

Date: Saturday, October 10, 2009
Time: 3:00pm – 5:00pm
Location: Kota Kemuning Buddhist Center (KKBC, BMSM Shah Alam)
26 (2nd Floor) Jalan R31/R, Shah Alam, Malaysia
Directions: See Google maps

KV and Wai Leng Soon of MALHEN have invited 18-yr old Ethan to talk about his homeschooling experience.

Ethan has been homeschooled by his parents all his life and he’s spilling the
beans on the only upbringing he’s ever had – unschooled, unsocialised, and
deprived of  “an environment to associate with other children where they will learn to
communicate, understand different kind of people behaviour, concern for others,
live with others, handle relationships and etc..”
(in the words of some
concerned parents)

Early this year, he applied to join a missions exposure programme on board the
ship LOGOS HOPE, which was then berthed in Denmark. He flew to Denmark on his
own and spent 6 months traversing the seas and 11 European cities. In this
presentation, he talks about being a homeschooler and how his experience abroad
impacted his life.

Everyone’s welcome.

His parents are understandably nervous.

Let the children play!

Posted by DAVID BC TAN under: Announcement.

Oops, I know this notice comes a little late, but there you go. Consider signing up if you are a Christian parent with young children, or if you are involved in children’s work and ministry.

I do think it will be extremely helpful to look at how ‘play’ forms a large part of child development. Unfortunately it is misunderstood as ‘unproductive’ and dismissed as a waste of time. So now you have children in preschool and kindy who are put through the academic grind – exams! tuition! – as if all that matters is a leg up in book learning. Here’s what the New York Times reported recently:

More recently, though, a backlash has been growing against the preacademic approach among educators and child psychologists who argue that it misses the whole point of early-childhood education. “Kindergarten has ceased to be a garden of delight and has become a place of stress and distress,” warned a report released in March by a research group called the Alliance for Childhood, which is advised by some of the country’s most esteemed progressive-education scholars. There is now too much testing and too little free time, the report argues, and kids are being forced to try to read before they are ready. The solution, according to the report’s authors, is a return to ample doses of “unstructured play” in kindergarten. If kids are allowed to develop at their own paces, they will be happier and healthier and less stressed out. And there will still be plenty of time later on to learn how to read.

‘Godly Play’ while built on similar concepts places the whole idea of play in the context of Christian education. It’s a method designed to help children develop awareness of God, the language of faith, and an appreciation of the sacred in their lives, through the use of child-centered and creative play activities.
